What Happens at Your Consultation?

Some people call it a Consultation, others call it a Tasting.  Either way, our consultations are complimentary!  We will prepare samples of some of our most popular flavors and fillings and leave you to enjoy them and discuss (privately) which are your favorites and how you would like to pair the fillings with the cake.
When you are ready, we will sit down with you and discuss design ideas, sizes, Groom’s Cake options, pricing, special requests, stand rentals and contract details.   The appointments generally last from about an hour to an hour and a half.

Tackle box Groom's Cake

What are Groom's Cakes?
The Groom's cake is an old tradition (dating back to the 17th
century in Britain). Originally, they were much denser and were generally some type of heavy fruit cake.  Chocolate was eventually was incorporated in Groom's cakes and began a trend in which the Groom's cake was more rich than the bride's (which was a lighter, airier cake).

As cake decorating techniques and tools improved, the Groom's cakes began to reflect the particular interests of the Groom.  Today's Groom's cakes which are still a very popular tradition in the southern United States tend to be either decadent chocolate topped with fruits or fun, 3-D cakes with elaborate artwork to truly capture the Groom's profession, hobby, food or even his favorite tv show!

Once served separately at the rehearsal dinner, a new trend has taken hold in which the Bride's cake and Groom's cake are placed on the same table together, showing off each of their personal styles.  Some people still choose to serve the Groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner, however almost all have abandoned the tradition of giving a slice to a single woman to place under her pillow.

Fondant or Icing?
Many brides love the look of fondant.  It is smooth and clean… it just looks good.  The thing is, have you tasted fondant?  Many of our customers, once they taste fondant realize that they much prefer the taste of buttercream icing.  We can cover cakes with fondant if you prefer, but we generally recommend that you go with buttercream instead.  Did you know that almost every wedding cake on this page is decorated with buttercream icing?  We can make it look like fondant, but it is buttercream! Our buttercream icing is made from scratch and you will get a chance to taste it at your consultation.  Once you try it, you will love it!

What's your style?
A great place to start when describing your design to us is how would you define your taste?  Classic, elegant, romantic, rustic, modern, geek,  rugged, natural, flashy or simple? This helps us narrow down design elements if you haven't already found a cake that you love.

TIP: When you are trying to find your inspiration cake, pay attention to detail. Do you like quilted patterns with dragées (the little balls that look like pearls, silver or gold or even in colors)? Do you like simple scrollwork, damask patterns, draping (looks like fabric hanging between two bows), ruffles, ribbons, or lace? How about smooth sleek designs with modern edges and straight lines or chevrons?  When you figure out the individual elements that you like about a cake it makes it easier to figure out that special "wow" factor that suits your personal taste!

Fresh flowers or sugar flowers?  Some brides prefer the "wow" factor of having carefully hand crafted sugar flowers adorning their cakes while others prefer fresh or even artificial flowers to be arranged on them.  We've seen it all.  There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Fresh flowers are beautiful, but some shouldn't come into contact with food and most of the others still are not food.  Additionally, they are not "hand crafted" but if you are looking for a natural theme, they might be the best choice for you. Real flowers can be dried and displayed as reminders of your special day.

Artificial flowers are often obviously fake but for the most sentimental brides they can be a wonderful thing! One of our own girls chose artificial flowers for her wedding and ten year anniversary cake because after the celebration, she made them into permanent decor for her home- this way every day she and her husband have a reminder of their love and commitment to each other.

Sugar flowers have the obvious benefit of being edible!  We carefully handcraft each flower and make it as realistic as possible.  Sugar flowers  do not wilt or die and they can be saved, but they are fragile.  The photo above is of some of our hand crafted sugar flowers.

Wedding Cake Sizes

Special Dietary Concerns

It can be frustrating to try and find a cake for your Wedding Day when the Bride, Groom or family member has special dietary concerns such as food allergies, intolerances or sensitivities.

Before your tasting it is important that you let us know if you have any concerns about allergies.
We can usually accommodate most special requests. Sometimes however, we need time to research, find alternative ingredients, and we need to  “experiment” with a few recipes (some alternative ingredients alter taste or texture of the cake and we want it to taste fabulous!).

When we know about your allergies or intolerances  before your tasting, we are able to prepare samples that suit your special dietary needs!

*Please be aware that our bakery does use common allergens on a daily basis. Airborne particles of allergens may still be present no matter how careful we are to prevent cross contamination.
